Global Infertility Leader Teams Up With MyDirectives® to Help Families Prepare for Parenthood
Easy Online Advance Medical Directive Ensures New Parents Have Important Conversations About Medical Wishes
CHICAGO – MyDirectives®, a service of Dallas, TX-based ADVault, Inc., today announced a partnership with Lotus Blossom Consulting founder Mindy Berkson, one of the world’s foremost infertility consultants. As part of the partnership, Mindy will recommend MyDirectives, a web-based system that allows people to create and update a free and secure advance care plan that includes a high-quality medical directive to document medical treatment wishes and store critical contact and insurance information all in one place if people are unable to communicate for themselves.
“Most intended parents are only thinking of the end goal – to have the child they have always dreamed of. Many of them do not think about communicating their other important medical wishes and putting in place advance care plans,” said Mindy Berkson, founder of Lotus Blossom Consulting. “For example, if freezing your eggs, or using an egg donor, couples need to discuss what would happen to these eggs if something happened to one of them. With my LGBT clients, for example, they have the added stress of determining legal parental rights when in some states, their marriage may not even be considered legal. MyDirectives makes this part of the process simple so that new parents don’t need to have these difficult conversations over and over again.”
MyDirectives guides people through the creation of a single, user-friendly document called a Universal Advance Digital Directive™ that combines all the elements of a living will and a medical power of attorney as well as a person’s preferences for CPR, organ donation and autopsy. Questions include video instructions and other help modules for each section and it asks people a mix of close-ended and open-ended questions so they can express their personal thoughts and feelings. It even includes the option to upload video and audio messages.
“A good quality care plan that can be accessed at any time, from anywhere is critical for all of us, and especially to my clients who are taking on new responsibilities as new parents,” said Berkson. “At Lotus Blossom, we are all about helping people navigate a complex new world by giving them hope, clarity and guidance. Offering MyDirectives to all of my clients will help them answer these important questions from the comfort of their own home and give them a sense of peace during a stressful and emotional time.”
Unlike a paper document, the free all-digital MyDirectives service securely stores a person’s digital directive in the cloud so it is available at the push of a button 24/7 anywhere in the world.
“Mindy does an amazing job helping people achieve their dream of having a family. With that joy comes the realization that what happens to you no longer affects only you,” said Jeff Zucker, CEO of MyDirectives. “Expanding a family is a natural time to put a plan in place that helps parents prepare for and have important conversations about the types of medical care they’d want in the future.”
Berkson made a specific mention of how her LGBT clients benefit. “Twenty-first century innovations have given many in the LGBT community the chance to have children and a family. Unfortunately, many extended family members don’t always respect the wishes of the LGBT community; in fact, I see healthcare agents often separate from a family member to avoid just that risk,” said Berkson.
“Without an official agent named,” added Zucker, “extended family members might make decisions not in the LGBT person’s best interest. In the few minutes it takes to create an advance medical directive, parents can legally name the person or people they want to make critical healthcare decisions for their family.”
