Advance Care Planning Leaders Announce Alliance
MyDirectives® and MIDEO® Highlight Quality and Patient Safety In New Digital Partnership
Minneapolis, MN (C-TAC Annual Summit), October 8, 2019 — ADVault, the global leader in digital advance care plan creation, storage and retrieval, and the Institute on HealthCare Directives, the nation’s leading research entity on medical order quality and patient safety, today unveil an enterprise offering for doctors, hospitals and health insurance plans to scale quality digital medical orders. The joint platform, in design and testing for years, is being introduced to select clients at this week’s Coalition to Transform Advanced Care C-TAC Summit in Minneapolis.
Dallas, Texas-based ADVault, Inc. is the creator of the award-winning MyDirectives® platform. With individual users in all 50 states and over 40 countries, MyDirectives lets people create a digital advance care plan or upload any advance directive, advance care plan or portable medical order into the ADVault ExchangeTM, allowing interoperable, real-time sharing and access 24/7 anywhere in the world.
Erie, Pennsylvania-based Institute on HealthCare Directives is the creator of the digital portable medical order and advance care planning platform MIDEO®. MIDEO (My Informed Decisions on VidEO) is a clinician-driven tool already used by people in 19 states. It is based on the years of peer-reviewed TRIAD research from principal investigator Dr. Ferdinando Mirarchi, the Institute’s Founder and Chief Medical and Scientific Officer.
“Advance care planning without an intentional focus on patient safety and quality is dangerous,” said Dr. Mirarchi. “For years, our team has studied clinical decision making and medical order interpretation because research shows providers were making serious mistakes. These mistakes go both ways: people are getting less, or more, treatments than they want because their voice isn’t being heard. ADVault’s clients know these mistakes have caused both wrongful death and wrongful prolongation of life lawsuits. We quietly began working with ADVault years ago because they, like us, are passionately committed to addressing these critically important safety and quality issues.”
The MIDEO and MyDirectives alliance is announced as results from TRIAD XII are released documenting that POLST and do-not-resuscitate orders are often inaccurate, inaccessible and discordant with patient wishes for medical care.
“TRIAD XII expands upon and reinforces the findings from earlier TRIAD studies and my years on-the-ground in hospitals dealing with health crises,” said Dr. Brian Yeaman, ADVault Medical Director for Clinical Informatics and Workflows. “The comprehensive ADVault ecosystem is designed to answer TRIAD’s very important call for quality initiatives focused on patient safety to prevent medical errors.”
Among the many aspects of the alliance, MIDEO files will be securely stored and accessible via the ADVault Exchange, and ADVault enterprise clients can upgrade to include the MIDEO experience for select individual MyDirectives users, even for people who want to append MIDEO to their paper-based advance care plan, advance directive (such as Five Wishes®), or portable medical order.
“We are founded on the belief that people should live with confidence they can have a voice in their care, even if they are in a health emergency and can’t communicate,” said ADVault CEO Jeff Zucker. “Dr. Mirarchi’s TRIAD research and MIDEO innovation reinforce our mission and help doctors and nurses accurately interpret medical orders and advance care plans. We are honored to join together to help solve this decades-old public health crisis.”
“We are excited to unveil our work with Dr. Mirarchi at the C-TAC Summit,” said ADVault’s Director of Platform Innovation Maria D. Moen. “Our provider and payer partners recognize the value of personalized advance care planning to inform treatment decisions and are excited to work with us to set an even higher standard for person-centered healthcare. By adding MIDEO as an option to our MyDirectives service, we can empower more people and reduce the risk of life-changing medical mistakes.”
