5 ways to Celebrate National Healthcare Decisions Day
Those of you who are familiar with the MyDirectives family and our mission know that we believe every person is the spokesperson for his/her own future. Part of this future involves advocating for your own healthcare decisions. After all, life throws you curveballs everyday, and you should be the one to determine how you’re going to knock it out of the park. Next Wednesday, April 16, marks the 7th Annual Healthcare Decisions Day, a day dedicated to “inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning.” We are proud to join with more than 1,500 state and national organizations as partners in this movement as together, we seek to share the benefits of creating an advance directive with people across America.
Here are 5 things you can do to participate in National Healthcare Decisions Day!
1. Start a conversation with your loved ones
Nothing feels better than knowing that your friends and family are supporting your decisions 100%. Let them know your healthcare preferences -- and gauge their feedback. Talking about medical wishes and priorities will help your family understand where you are coming from, and will encourage them to share their wishes with you.
2. Create/update your advance directive
Your advance directive provides unique instructions that specify your medical requests and personal values to medical professionals and your loved ones. As your circumstances and personal priorities change, you can update your directive at the click of a button.
3. Talk to your friends about making an advance directive too
Help them prepare for the future by letting them know the advantages of creating one. Have a conversation with them about whyyoudecided to.
4. Share the news!
Use social media to share your progress and activities with your circles. Tweet using #NHDD, and “like” the National Healthcare Decisions Day Facebook page and MyDirectives’ page so that you don’t miss an update! Follow us at @MyDirectives for updates.
