Mother’s Day is Sunday.
All moms are great even if they didn't end up on this list of ladies who graced our televisions in the 80s, we know. And most moms have been heard to say "plan ahead," "be prepared," and that even with the best laid plans can often go awry. Milk is spilt. You fall off your bike. Kids get sick -- sometimes just in time for vacation.
So this Mother’s Day, do something different and REALLY special… honor your Mom by saying "I'm taking your advice to make a 'just in case' plan and I'd like your help. In fact, maybe we can do one together for each of us." Sit with your mom and start a conversation with your and her health and happiness (Huffington Post has some good questions and why you should ask them), because all of our moms deserve the peace of mind that comes from knowing their children are taken care of and that they can cross one more thing off of their to do list.
Talk about your hopes and dreams, and ask her to share hers. Find out what makes her happy when she’s sick – see if it’s the same movie or snack that always made you feel better.
It may be a difficult conversation, but it’ll be one you’ll remember for years to come and one that can save you the heartache of regret when it becomes too late.
But don’t just talk; write it down, or better yet, use your iPhone or a webcam or tablet and record your thoughts so there's no confusion later about what each of you want.
If your mom is anything like mine, she’s been there for you over the years. Take the time this Mother’s Day to do this – something really meaningful – together. It will be a gift to her and yourself you'll treasure for a lifetime.
Finally, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there from me and the MyDirectives’ crew! Thanks for everything you’ve done for us.
